Adding myself to the list of people that have this. Added more RAM, bought a new graphics card, all thinking this might solve the problem. Obviously reinstalled everything on my computer, cleaned the whole damn thing on any files that might have been left behind. Tried a new hard drive, spend hundreds of pounds trying to get this goddamn game to work, but as soon as I do flying missions, it crashes the display drivers on my computer. Bloody acknowledge there's a problem at least and work on a fix! I THINK I HAVE A SOLVE! I have been having issues with random BSODS or locking up and sound going into an infinite clicking loop.
I have had this issue on TWO computers. My old system was an AMD 9950 quadcore with 4gb ram AMD video card(that was above min specs). I had random lockups in BF3, and then in SWTOR. So I bought a new computer. ALL NEW COMPONENTS!
I7-2600k 16gb RAM, Nvidia GTX 460 video card. I STILL GET THE PROBLEM!! I've tried old versions of drivers, new versions of drivers. This new system was CLEAN BUILD, and had ALL the most recent drivers. Nothing worked. BUT I FOUND A FIX! Turns out it's an issue with the way these games are passing info between the multiple cores of the CPU's.
Solution: 1) fire up game. I go all the way to logging in my character. 2) ALT+TAB back to desktop 3) Fire up Task Manager(CTRL+SHIFT+ESC). 4) Go to processes tab.
5) find the two SWTOR.EXE processes. 6) Right click on the SWTOR.EXE processes and select 'Set Affinity'. 7) Deselect and select 'CPU 0'. 8) do step 6 on for both processes of SWTOR.exe.
9) alt+tab back to game and start playing. This fixed my problem. I am now able to play for extended periods of time with no crashing. NOTE: You need to do this EVERY time you go to play as it's not a permanently remembered setting. If you can't even get into the app, and you are on Win7. Maybe try this.
1) From start menu, in the search text box, type MSCONFIG and hit enter. 2) Click on the 'boot' tab. 3) Click 'Advanced Options' 4) Select bullet next to 'Number of processors' 5) Leave Processors at 1.
6) click OK's to exit and then reboot. 7) this should reboot you and only use a single core of your processor.
Try the game and see if it makes a difference. Unselect step 4 on above to put your computer back to normal. Obviously, try to use the 'Set Affinity' stuff from beginning of this post, before you go with the hard core MSConfig test. Hope it helps folks! Hopefully this helps someone figure out the true fix and allow me to run the game with multi-core support. This worked for me, game is a bit laggy.but no crashes.
THIS GAME IS NOT MADE FOR WIN 7 PLATFORM AS MUCH AS THEY WANT IT TO BE. THIS GAME IS BEING DEVELOPED FOR 8 YRS - TIME WHEN WIN XP WAS ULTIMATE GOAL. SWTOR was not made for XP. Please stop spreading this FUD.

JUST STOP SAYING U NOT HAVE WAY TO SORT THING, DO AS TOLD AND PLAY GAME AS U EXPECTED TO. The way we are 'expected' to play this game is by having a PC with the recommended system requirements. As it is, nowhere on there does it say 'Windows XP only' or 'not Windows 7 compatible.' So your argument is invalid. You are not being helpful. And apparently having Windows XP has also broken your Shift key.:p. Sorry but in my case i have no problembs with The Old Republic what so ever i feel sorry for those of you who do and its like with all mmo's some systems have trouble do not for get hero engine is new so such problems can happen I am not saying that it is okay but you either bear with the situation until its resolved by Bioware i do the old republic since 13th of December and had no black scrren/blue screen or crashes how you describe it so ther 2 options either my sytem is in a good one or i am somehow not in the areas where you have problem's.
This worked for me, game is a bit laggy.but no crashes. Where did you find that solution by GrouchieGrumbles? I went through all 75+ pages of this thread and didn't see it. (I wish BW would bring back Forum Search-would probably cut down on a lot of frustration and excess posts.) Haven't tried Grouchie's fix yet (afraid to, on my new rig, until BW officially says something) but it seems to make sense.
I initially thought the freeze-up/sound stuttering issue I'm having was a result of SWTOR ignoring/overriding some driver parameters-and it still may be related-but Grouchie's post is useful nonetheless. I hope Bioware read it! I'm sure the devs are aware of the issue. But it's nice to see knowledgeable, helpful folks like Grouchie put their technical expertise to work and try to offer suggestions. It might help get the crash/freeze bug fixed a little quicker.:) We're all anxiously wanting to play.
Yea, but it would be nice if bioware would tell us if their working on a solution or not. By now you should know that they only tell us what we are allowed to know if you did not know this you do now EA see its customers as children so they decides what we are allowed to know and what not so if they have not revealed any statement on this issue they maybe have no solution yet what i say is what i seen and witnessed with my time with them witch is since 2009 so you all have to wait your turn until this hot issue as i see it is solved. For those having 'random' black screen crashes: 1. After black screen, if you wait 1 min, does your computer shutdown on it's own? If yes, if you then press the main power button, does your computer resume back to your desktop with the game still running?
These are my symptoms. Something is forcing my computer into SLEEP mode, and if I let it run it's course, and re-power, I'm back to my desktop with no boot screen and with the game still running. This happens to me every time I'm in a PvP battleground, and very frequently while grouped in a Boss fight.
Mine is not an overheating issue. I'm monitoring my graphics temp with EVGA Precision and they're under 70 deg C. I've also run the FurMark stress test for 22 min with no issues (max temp hit was 77 C). So, is anyone else seeing this behavior?

While I feel the pain of your issue I would like to reiterate that this thread is for those having black screen crashes to an unresponsive PC/laptop and forcing us to hold down our power buttons to turn our machines off and back on. For any other problems related to SWTOR, please start your own thread - as this thread has gotten out of hand with too many different issues. Not trying to be mean, but we're trying to keep this thread on track so we can get this particular problem fixed so we can play.

So, I'll repeat my question for those who didn't understand. If you are having 'random' black screen crashes: How long are you waiting to determine the PC is 'unresponsive'? If you wait 1-2 minutes, does the computer shut down on it's own?
I know u wll shoot me for this. But i think it just might be lack of memory. Not just pure ram but graph with 512 mb instead of 1gb i seen have most probs cant tell taht i know much about ati 4800 rly but as i see u have overall 3.5 gb with mem from graph. That just might be the reason i would stll recon u change display from 1650-1050 to something lower. Like 1360 - 768 and try it.
Might be just what u need yea, i tried all the resolutions, went down to 800x600 and still didnt work. And win xp can only have 4gb ram max. I had to disconnect my new computer and start using my old one.Becouse i get black screen then reboot on all games now. For those having 'random' black screen crashes: 1. Computer being forced into Sleep mode? Power-on, and back to the desktop with the game still running? Im sry but this is not the same as mine. As i have stated before i paid good $ for my pc to never overheat, and i monitor it 100% of the time, ie: i have starcraft 2 settings set to EXTREME, and my cpu runs at 37c and at a loading screen it will jump to 41c, my gpu runs at 46c.
Now with swtor my gpu has gone up to 57c, but still not overheating. By a long shot. And sometimes i play for 1 min - 40 mins. Totally random always crashes. I was crashing pretty non stop prior to the 1.1.0 Patch last week. Whatever happened during that patch stopped the issue from happening constantly. I crashed maybe 1 time in an 8 hour span.
Something happened overnight last night and now I cannot stay in game more than 15 seconds. I was just hard crashing to desktop with no errors. Sometimes I would get errors in my windows logs (See below). I don't know how long this will last. But I tried logging into the game again yesterday and it black screen crashed my computer.
Then upon rebooting my computer, it was black screen crashing even without trying to run any games. After a few login tries, I was finally able to use system restore and revert my system back to December 13th. After that, it wasn't crashing on login anymore. Somehow the game had corrupted files in my system. After reinstalling Avast and Advanced System Care and video card drivers and all the windows updates. I then opened the login screen of the game before the game launches, and opened settings and ran a repair of the game. Then I restarted my system and ran the game.
I was able to play for hours without any crashes. I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope it will be ok. Though the game for some reason is really heavy on my video card, even though I have it on the lowest graphics settings and I have a Radeon HD 5970 video card and 8GB of ram in my system. I have a brand new computer Asus Quad Core, liquid cooling, 8mb ram, and Nvidia Gtx 580 card. The game worked fine through the last two betas.
It worked fine from early preorder playing from Dec 16 to Dec 19. Then BW shut the servers down until midnight and put through a prerelease patch. That is when my problems started.
I have read numerous posts with the identical symptoms. There were so many posts they have restarted the thread 3 times now in the last 10 days. The only response is. We are aware of the problem. Please check your video driver, check for DX11, check windows. Blah blah blah. This does not even show in the Dev Tracker, nor does it show in the pre patch summary.
How many people have to send them their Dxdiag before they realize this is a serious problem. I actually gave up and pulled my 5 year old computer out of mothballs. Although it is a bit jumpy due to an older card. It has worked fine for two days now with zero crashes. I believe this is a software problem and it lies somewhere between the driver manufacturer and the game client.
In my case THE ONLY VARIABLE is something they did with the patch the evening of December 19. Hey BW go buy a new high end system with a GTX 580. Take it home and play and see what happens. Please do something soon.

From what I've read (and what's happened to me) yes, that is the case. When it crashes to black my monitor goes into it's standby/sleep mode as if the entire computer had been unplugged from it. That is exactly what it does. It turns your graphics card off. I already burned one card out and am now on my second. So yes, be wary of your kit. Problem is, once it has started because of this game, it will also happen when you're not playing the game.
Like someone said before, it is likely is corrupts some files or something. Having said that, that is what happened with my first card, now with my new one, it has so far only happened in game. Well, I pretty much have had enough. I just canceled my subscription because I can't play this game, and no fixes or checks work even though my computer is more than capable of running the game.
Its funny, BF3 had the same issues. Everyone posted about freezing, hardcrashing, low FPS issues, they teamed together with nvidia and got it fixed with patches and driver updates. And I mean, the SAME EXACT problem. When I would customize my gear and weapons on the BF3 selection screen, eventually the models would stop loading and the game would hardlock my computer 1 minute later. Same thing now with SWTOR, I scroll through character customization options for a bit and the models stop loading, 1 min later hardlock. I'll be back when you fix it! This is not a bump, bumping is illegal and can get you banned.

I am just here to say that my computers. I think I have this issue. My first question is, can code physicaly kill a graphics card? I dont see how it could but I dont know much about it. I have 6 week old PC, quad core i5 2500 (not OC), gtx 560 ti 1GB. Its been running great.
Iv done 10-14 hour stretches on MW3, WH40K-DW2 etc. Its been great. A few nights ago after about 6 hours on ToR it did a hard reset, just black screen freeze and rebooted its self.
The next day I was on WH40K Space Marine for a few hours then switched to ToR. A few hours later it again black screened and hard reset. I thought it was over heating but its not, the temps are 60ish on the GPU and 50ish combined on the CPU. Iv checked performance and i'm getting 80-100 FPS in ToR with settings on max and everything on, its running great. Now, 5 minutes in ANY game results in a black screen freeze and hard reset.
Its steadily got worse, at first it would last an hour, then half and hour, now its minutes, sometimes seconds. I have reduced settings in games and on the card its self, I've set fan speeds to max so the GPU was only running at 50 and the CPU and 47 and it still did it. I have run a FurMark 3D test with max settings, it worked before, now the PC hard resets after 5 mins.
FPS of 27, max temp of 72 and steady. That would suggest a physical defect in the card. Is it coinceidence or has ToRs code killed my card? I think I have this issue. Is it coinceidence or has ToRs code killed my card? Im wondering the same thing, ive never had any problems until i started playing this game. I could handle wow on max and run 60 fps in cities.
Now everytime i try to play this game, i crash either to desktop, or my computer just powers off. Its really aggravating and im hoping there will be a fix or a response from bioware sometime soon. Yea, bioware is really strict, banning people for swearing to friends in private chat when their is a language filter seems kind of extreme.
If they spent as much timing working on this problem as they do monitoring private chats, maybe they would have found a fix by now. If they would only do what they promised at e3 in june 2011 people would not be so aggressive the time for words are over its their actions who decide the future of the Old Republic that should be their prime concern hopefully they will do some improvements on the 4th of jan until then we have to wait. Is BioWare fixing this problem? When does the next patch come out? I'm very reluctant to mess around with my card settings just for this game.
I'm concerned about ruining my system, or frying my video card. Also, as I'm paying for a subscription, I'd like to know when this will be fixed, otherwise, it would be better just to cancel my subscription until they've addressed it. I can't play this game in this condition.
I also couldn't be bothered to read almost 200 pages of posts about this issue (this thread plus the one they closed due to its size). I just don't have that much time to spend on this. Mentally prepare yourself for 200 pages of threads into a few sentences. Many 'fixes' were found.
Those fixes worked for awhile, then the game went back to crashing whether it would be to desktop or a complete power down. Some people's computers have essentially became bricks since they started playing this game so i would be careful too. I have tried every solution suggested and nothing was a permanent fix so im just gonna wait this out for a fix or cancel my subscription and hopefully be refunded my 63 dollars for the game and the 15 i paid for this month. I've tried uninstalling re-installing the client, Making sure EVERYTHING is up to date (nvidia drivers, mother board, os, DX), I've turned my graphics settings all the way down, all the way up, in the middle, turned blom off, turned shadows off, turned grass and trees down, monitored my gpu temp, fan speed, playing in full screen windowed mode, windows mode. I've cleared my drivers and re installed them, I've down loaded beta drivers.I'm not sure what to do now. I was going to upgrade my graphics and switch brands ( running a nvidia GeForce gts 450).

What kind of graphics card do you have? It sounds like it cant handle the rendering of the game environment but can do the side bars and other stuff.
I just took out my graphics card and stress tested the system with ASUS stress test tool. With the card in, the PC crashes when stress testing the CPU.
Without the card in the PC completes the stress test. Has to be the card, surely just has to be. So did ToR kill it or did it just die its self? For those being told your cards over heating, download 'speedfan' and it will tell you the temps, so will Nvidia System Monitor. If your temps are 80+ then theres a possibility they are over heating but anything under 70 I personaly think is acceptable. If your running a ASUS P8z68 motherboard, you could download the latest bios file from asus, stick it on a pen drive or other cd or external drive and then use the in-built tool in the asus bios to updated it. Its easy, look for EZ update in asus options.

And its probably around that for an ati too. Where abouts in speedfan is it telling you about errors? Not something i've seen before. In the top 'Readings' tab?
You can ignore the other tabs TBH unless you know what your doing. You should have a set of system scan results in the top window as it detects the fans and things, under that a CPU meter then under that two columns, one with system fan speeds and one with system temps. Just in case we're talking about a differant app, If you have an Nvidia card, you can download Nvidia System Monitor and it does the same thing but more flashy. Okay now im really confused, payed fifty quid fpr a game that dont work like. I dont think it is my system coz i can see the mini mapp and quets and abilitys bar but the actual gameplay is just a black screen and i can hear everything in the backround.
I can also see my arrow of me moving in the mini map. Someone plz tell me what is happening, i just want to play the game. Please read carefuly the 1st post of the thread, this not the same problem. There's plenty of posts talking about yours. I'm not having any problems at all, im running Trifire 5870s and overclocked i7. Its PERFECT Great for you, but unless you are here to help.
We don't care. Having downgraded my drivers for my GTX 570 to 275.33 has meant I have been able to do all space missions without crashing to a black screen and having to do a hard reset. According to the Nvidia forums all 280+ (the latest is 285.62) drivers will likely give you this issue. It has so far not been acknowledged by Nvidia that it is an issue with their driver, but rolling back does seem to help for a lot of people, so give it a try. So far works for me.fingers crossed. Thanks for the update.
My wife cannot even get into game, it crashes once it gets past opening CS. I have 285.62 on her rig, I will rollback and report back for anyone else using Nvidia. Seems like my post got deleted? I may be on to something here but i have found that i changed graphics card drivers, main board drivers and direct x, i also disabled my antivirus and still had trouble. I have a mobo with onboard soundcard active, i changed drivers on that and it seems to be far more stable? If it continues im going to disable the onboard sound and see if that makes a difference?
We might want to start looking at common denominators as community here as the official line and feed back is slow to say the least? I yesterday was on and off the game from 10.30am to 10.30pm and in that period of time had @ 14 crashes? I went through a number of driver versions etc to try and find answers, but same results every time. Since the sound issue i have been able to manage to finish a quest and at the rate im going may even be able to play with others? I also suffer with the same problem.
I get a black screen with stuttering sound in the background anywhere from 30 seconds or up to 45 minuites of playing the game. I have to do a hard reboot to get my system functional again.
My system works perfectly well when playing other MMO's. I have been waiting for this game to be released for a while and to say im dissapointed is an understatement. Not dissapointed with the game itself from what I have experienced with the many staggered 10 minute segments of playtime before I have to hard boot the PC BUT with the lack of stability with NVIDIA graphics cards from what I can see on previous posts.
NVIDIA should really be a make of graphics card this game should be stable with. I booked a lot of time off work over and before Christmas to play this game and I have not been able to do so. I have an NVIDIA Geforce GT 220.

I booked a lot of time off work over and before Christmas to play this game and I have not been able to do so. I have an NVIDIA Geforce GT 220. I am almost tempted to just buy an ATI card and be done with this. This same issue happened to me when RIFT came out. From what I can gather most of the people affected are indeed Nvidia customers.
So tired of this brand. Funny part is MY computer has an ATI card and I have never had driver issues like this. After reading Harobi's post: This solved all the issues for me. I found that my video card was being over clocked by the AMD Vision Engine Control Center software.
By default, over clocking is on by default. As soon as I shut it off, it stabilized my rig. I would advise anyone to double check to ensure that nothing is being over clocked. Some system hardware or the software the comes with it comes over clocked by default. Although I was able to stabilize my system, it must be said that this is the only software that ever caused any issues, and I just bought this thing. When I got the black screening / hard reboot needed, it really messed up my system.
I had to rely on a backup to restore it back to normal. The black screening started happening in other programs after it happened in SWTOR. I was using a GTX 560 and having the pretty constant crashing issue.
I tried both the latest release, and the beta nvidia drivers, noticing no difference between the two. I stuck an old 9800 GTX+ into my PC and have no as of yet had any crashes. Currently using the 285.62 drivers. My best guess would be a DX11 issue. It seems like most of the people having problems either have good PCs with new video cards, or older ones near the min reqs. I'm also getting the same results with an Nvidia 570 GTX. I did the same thing, I have an old nVidia 9500GT in here, and no crashes at all so far.
I even went to character creation and scrolled through the options for like 10 minutes and no crash! I wonder what this means. Also something interesting, this card was having trouble with FPS and responsiveness (moving the camera around, moving your character etc. Was slow) until I took the advice of the other thread of people with FPS problems and changed all my settings to high, then back to low or off again. Now it runs considerably smoother and faster, and never crashes. I wonder if I throw in the newer card and do that trick if it would still crash and freeze. In 4 days I have crashed 15 times now.every 30 minutes to 2 hours I crash.I have been playing everyday since the 13th of Dec.Ever since the 28 of Dec.
I have had this happen.I have tried everything to fix it like turn off all firewalls,re download the game, update drivers, and turn all setting to low.I play in beta for over 8 weeks and never had this happen.Last patch they broke something and need to fix it.Here is a look at my DxDiag file.anyone have a fix please let me know. Nope, All i got was that standard droid e-mail telling me my ticket was succesfully deliverd (witch I guess is good news considering how all other things work in this game.) and that I will get a response.thats's 4 days ago.but I understand everyone has the right to a good new years party.
I'm not looking at the posts much since my comp won't be back from the shop anytime soon thanks to all the hard crashes. Lucky for me i discoverd a FTP card game wich my old laptop can run.so the money i'm paying for not playing starwars is not going to another game:). The game was constantly crashing for me too, so I reinstalled my video card drivers.
That solved the problem for a few days, but now it's happening again. Before, I would get the error message saying ' SWTOR has stopped working' but now I don't get anything, just quits to desktop.
I saw another thread that talked about overclocking and system instability. My Asus motherboard has an auto overclock feature that I currently have enabled. Going to turn that off and hopefully that will solve my problem. Was wondering if I had the same problem. My computer is restarting A LOT. Mainly when I click on play I get to the load screen wait a few seconds, hear the music then boom.
My pc usually reboots although a few times it has turned completely off. The game was working fine in early access. It's been like this now for about a week. I am a complete pc noob so just presumed it was my pc (which is under a year old) However after reading this thread I am unsure. I have managed to get into the game a few times and have been able to play for an hour or so. Today though on 3 occasions when my pc has rebooted it has rebooted straight again when I turn it back on and everything loads up.
Would this indicate my problem is different to yours!!!!! Thanks and help!:). Woohoo, just experienced my first BSOD with SWtOR (4 times in a row). As several others have reported, 2 out of the 4 times I attempted to get into the game, my screen simply blacks out and says 'No Signal' after the loading screen that appears after logging in. 1 time I managed to get to the character select screen, select my character, it goes to another loading screen and my game crashes after it fully loads. Consequently, I updated my drivers (though I am skeptical that is the problem), made sure things are up to date. Lo and behold, this time I manage to get into the game, but less than 5 minutes later as I am clicking through my quest log it goes to BSOD again.
This whole thing simply makes no sense to me for 2 main reasons: 1) I have been playing this game over the course of 2 weeks with no problems at all. 2) I had just been playing the game 6 hours ago, perfectly fine. Now, unless in between my play session 6 hours ago and now, some magical change overcame my computer I don't see how this is a hardware issue. Alternatively, regardless of how unlikely I find it to be, perhaps my latest play session was the straw that broke the camel's back. I will come around to posting a dxdiag later. Just wanted to pass this along, i too was having blackscreen hard crashes, not the startup/load crashes.
I noticed while running evga prec. That certain areas of the game cause my gpu to jump 15 to 20 degrees past NORMAL PEAK TEMPs. That is to say, normal peak temps for my card are high 60s low 70s. I personally dont like to see it get over 85. I think max temp is like 107 for the 460 gtx. Opened up my case.
Upped my gpu fan from 85% to 100% and 3. Underclocked my card by probably 6 to 8%, enough to keep my peak temps at or below 85 degrees max. Since doing this, i have been 100% stable well over 24 hours of gametime. I have absolutly no doubt that before i opened up my case, maxed my gpu fan, and underclocked my card, that this game was heating my gpu up beyond 100 degrees for whatever reason. I should add, im on a new build so dust bunny patrol had been recently done. Its no my gpu, its a conflict with swtor/drivers/ etc. Any other game i throw at this gpu, bf3, skyrim, rift, whatever.70 degrees max.
There should be no reason that i can walk indoors and watch my gpu temps raise 15 to 20 degrees ABOVE NORMAL PEAK in like 30 seconds, it heats up REALLY fast in certain areas of the map. Hope they get this ironed out, i have no doubt this has probably helped fry some peeps cards who have been trying to run the game repeatedly and blackscreening. Good luck all, the game is good when you can get it to run. I had a night mare install as well as the black screen crashes. Beta.worked fine. Early access.worked fine.
After game release.worked fine. And now all of the sudden I can't even play. I'm on an Asus G73Jh with required specs. I was playing the game recently and all of the sudden and without warning got a black screen to automatic computer shut down. This presisted the next few times I logged on at random times throghout gaming. I updated my vid driver, and windows updates, and un-installed/re-installed the game.
It didn't help, I still get black screen with lagging sound to force restart, sometimes grey screen freezes, and in game for the few minutes I get to play before I lose it, the town I'm in has green walls all over the place. It's progressively getting worse it seems and the worst part is that it worked perfectly until right around new years eve. Really hope they fix this with next patch or something. Super disappointed.
I had the problem where the screen would go black after the character selection screen. Sometimes I would get in and sometimes the screen would go black. Once I got in though, it ran stable. I tried lots of different drivers, underclocking, changing the gpu voltage etc. Even reinstalled windows. Then I tried to run it with GPU fan at max all the time. No crashes that way, so it seems to have been an overheating issue after all.
Now I'm using MSI afterburner to set the variable fan speed at different temperatures. Just have them abit higher than the default. Something to try for the people with the same problem. My card is Radeon HD 6870.
Edit: btw the gpu temp never seemed high in the first place. Was slightly over 60C at worst. After 6 calls over 8 hours on the phone and over 15 crashes in 4 days tier 3 thinks this is whats wrong and is working on it. I already cancelled my account like a week ago but still pop in here from time to time to see if they've fixed the problem. Actually I'd be satisfied if they'd at least acknowledge it. Doesn't look like they're really even bothering with the same copy and pasted droid responses they've infrequently given in the past. Still so pissed I blew $80 on this nonsense for 3 hours of game play.
The Tenth Doctor finds himself on a strange new cuboid world in this all-new culinary adventure! The Regali Kitchen made this custom order cake for Geektastic parents Barry and Maya for their awesome son, Aemon, who just turned eleven.
All of those little characters were modeled after actual Minecraft skins from PlanetMinecraft.com. I love that they chose to put The Doctor in his 3D specs from 'Doomsday.' It seems very on point. Of course, now that we've seen it, we can't stop imagining how awesome this game would be, with Daleks descending upon your creations each night and the TARDIS to whisk you back in time to correct your mistakes! I would play the bejesus of that game! ' Portal, and its successor Portal 2, took the brilliantly simple concept of a portal gun, combined it with a fantastic storyline that included a sadistic but hilarious antagonist, and created a game that is just as replayable today as it was eight years ago.
It was no surprise that my video game obsessed son took to it like a Cheep Cheep to water. Years after that first test chamber, he is still a huge fan and has amassed an impressive collection of t-shirts, toys, and collectibles based on the characters and story. So when it came time to remodel his room for his thirteenth birthday, and he asked for a Portal room, my wife and I wanted to make sure it was something worthy of one of Aperture Laboratories’ finest young test subjects.'
The nameless paint set is just what it says - a collection of tubes of paint without their colors labeled. Instead, each tube of paint is identified only by colors. “By not assigning names to the colors we want to expand the definition of what a color can be, and the various shades they can create by mixing them,” explains Yusuke Imai. This nostalgia inducing fan film will help tide you over until the release of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. It centers around a young boy, played by Hunter Leon, a host of the original Kenner Star Wars action figures, and whole lot of imagination. Despite a 'continuity error' (Kenner’s Millennium Falcon toy ), it perfectly captures the feeling of being a Star Wars fan in the late seventies. The short film was directed by J.C. Reifenberg and produced by James Arnold Taylor, the voice of Obi-Wan Kenobi on The Clone Wars and Rebels.

Pope Francis visited Philadelphia September 25th, and one local pastor was so excited about the visit that he’s built an gigantic LEGO model of the Vatican to commemorate the occasion. Reverend Bob Simon of St. Catherine of Siena Church created the massive and impressively detailed model of St. Peter’s Basilica and square in Vatican City from over half a million LEGO bricks over the course of ten months.
The model includes crowds of tourists visiting the square, a nun who’s documenting her pilgrimage with a selfie stick, safety blockades, and Swiss Guards guarding the Pope. Simon's Lego Vatican was going on display at The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, where Pope Francis took part in the World Meeting of Families on September 26th and 27th. The display coincided with the museum's new, which showcased significant objects from the Catholic Church's history. ' by 'Initially conceived in the late summer of 2012, this titanic brute was been gradually worked on from July to December and finally completed towards the end of 2012. Various obstacles, such as work-related and/or financial problems halted its production, but nonetheless I managed to complete this giant controller, in both its LEGO structure as well as electrical functionality. Resting atop a large folding table in my attic workshop, the controller is built of light-grey LEGO brick walls with large removable tiled plates for the ceiling.
Like previous works, I’ve used custom glossy stickers for the labels originally, but in 2015 I modified it slightly by removing the labels and using LEGO pieces to create the text. The innards are mainly hollowed with some trusses and support for the buttons; the buttons are spring-loaded modules using LEGO Technic pieces to make the large buttons reciprocate when pressed. Below the large LEGO buttons are small momentary pushbuttons soldered to the actual circuitry board of an original NES controller, which is then linked to a USB converter to play Nintendo ROMs on my computer. When the large LEGO buttons are pressed, the bottoms make contact with the pushbuttons, which then send the electrical signal back to the controller’s circuit “brain”; the LEGO Technic spring suspension system prevents the large buttons from getting stuck in place.
For the record, I do in fact own hard copies of each ROM that I used, and the controller can also work with an actual NES. After this creation was published and posted amongst numerous websites, I was personally in spring 2013. Currently I’m looking forward to showcasing this mighty monument at some video game conventions.' It is all in Beta but it should be functional. I got some more stuff planned for the future. New Project: Lady Sabre and Pirates of the Ineffable Aether. Nick Royer was made famous on Cuusoo with his project '.'
It was one of the few to reach 10,000 using totally new IP and that is no small feet indeed when it comes to Cuusoo. Now he has released his second project and WOW, does it look fun. Much like Space Troopers this project is playing out like a theme, but this one is based on pulp action instead of space adventures. Here is Royer's own intorduction to the project: An exciting new theme or mini-theme of Lego adventure: Hyperborea! Following the adventures of an expedition sent to explore the newly-discovered hollow world inside Earth, Hyperborea chronicles a variety of eccentric adventurerers in an alternate-history, steampunk world.
They face a variety of challenges and mysteries, including the sightless dinosaurs of Lower Hyperborea, and the powerful and mystifying Illuminati, an ancient organization obsessed with building pyramids. Personally I love pulp adventure so I am very excited to see this project, especially with Royer's quality designs. Crowd funded New 'Lego' Tank Treads. The expert Lego crafters at Brickmania are now launching a new part via Kickstarter:. This element is a simple variation on the existing Lego chain element but with an actual tread on it.
They are also hoping to produce a double wide version. This is a pretty brilliant move on their part as Tanks are pretty much Brickmania's bread and butter.
It looks like Brickmania is ready to move on these too because $13 will get you 100 double wide links with a shipping date of July 2013! Girl Genius Volume 12. If you like Lego which is probably true if you come here (even though I am talking about Crowd stuff now too) then you should probably also be reading. It has the zany energy and creativity that I find to be common in maturing FOLs. On top of that it has won three Hugos for crying out loud. On top of that it is free! My fandom of the Girl Genius goes all the way back to when there were a printed comic but they have long since passed on that model.
Now they publish on the web and occasionally print in trades. Their current Kickstarter is to get the funds to of the series. They are fully funded and have printed before so this is a no-risk kickstarter. If you have not been reading Girl Genius, check it out, but only if you like great art, crazy pulp adventure, mad science, militant cats, maniacal computers, love triangles, clockwork contraptions, and girl geniuses. If you have been reading Girl Genius and are not planning on getting a physcial copy of volume 12, please consider one of the $1 to $10 donations. Consider how much enjoyment you have gotten out of Kaja and Phil's exploits over the years and.tip them what they are worth.
Support Level: 63 Here is a great example of repeating a theme but presenting something attractive and new when you do it. This is the third Micro Hogwarts and by far the smallest. Even though it is so limited in scale though, it is instantly recognizable with features like the quidditch field and the strange towers that go off into the sky. Of the three micro Hogwarts I think this one strikes the best combination of scale (thus cost and displayability) and features. The inclusion of the light brick really adds a lot of charm. I do wonder why the quidditch field is missing a whole set of goals though.
Honorable Mentions. News Wow, I have been blogging for an entire year now. It just snuck up on me.
Next week I will celebrate by launching some of the beta code I have been 'hinting' at for weeks now. Some of the basic elements will allow me to radically change the format of the site while still providing the content that many of you come here to get. Crowd funded Update: Ogre Ogre, a classic tabletop strategy game from the 70's by Steve Jackson games relaunched itself though Kickstarter last year. It shattered Kickstarter's funding record for board games at the time receiving $923,680. A little over a year has passed now and the final review edition as arrived at Steve Jackson games. The scale of the game is, simply put, epic.
Box size: 24 by 20 by 5.8 inches. Box weight: 25.2 pounds. Maps laid out: 31 square feet. Maps laid out end-to-end: 13.8 feet long.
Counter sheets laid out unpunched: 29.9 square feet. No. Of 2-D counters: 1,100. No.
Of 3-D counters: 104. Total no. Of counters: 1,204 Now, I have been lucky enough to receive an early sheet of 3-D counters. I am glad to say that they they look fantastic and the quality is top notch. The art is excellent. Their was no difficulty popping them out of the sheets and I never got a hit of separation or tearing which sometimes occurs with games of lesser quality. The individual elements fit together simply and snugly.
Dirigible Days is one of those awesome things where you see people coming together together to make something fun and cool, and they will do it no matter what. Last year Dirigible Day's launched their n to get the shoestring budget for a Steampunk webseries. The setting is a Victorian Earth shattered by astronomical forces resulting in a multitude of floating islands called the Great Empire. The show has just a hint of the Firefly feel as it follows the crew of the airship S.S. Instead of Reavers though this world is best by Cthulhu cultists. That's right, Steampunk and Cthulhu.
The original webseries. My blunt review would be that the story is good, the setting is fun, and the production values are relatively high considering the budget. I think it is fair to say that more than a few scenes are off my a beat or two and that is likely the biggest weakness of the series.
Star Wars Venator Model
The feel of the series is also very consistent so if If you like the first episode you will likely enjoy them all, if you first one does not grab your fancy, then it is not for you. Dirigible Days is launching a new Kickstarter though: Here is the summary of the story line: Captain Santiago Dunbar, mute pilot Josie Devereaux, and witty engineer Hooper Jefferson return, along with new comrades Dr.
Nella Chatterjee and navigator Mackie MacMillan, in an epic steampunk tale of airships, super robots, political plots and evil cultists. When Captain Dunbar learns that his mentor—revolutionary and genius inventor Desmond Ellington—has been kidnapped by the Empire of Rabasa in order to complete a weaponized automaton colossus, the crew begins a perilous journey of danger and intrigue throughout Africa in order to discover the truth: from the skyland of Khara-Khoto, to the jungles of Kenzania, across the savannahs of Ethiopia, and into the desert ruins of Irem, City of Pillars. World War is on the horizon, but is this crisis caused by the warmongering government of Rabasa or masterminded by a familiar and malevolent enemy?
Sounds like a fun pulpy adventure. $10 will get you a digital copy and $25 will get you a printed copy. Support Level: 97 Wow! What a brilliant use of the Iron Man hero-factor chest piece. This guy is just fantastic and a very successful mash up of standard Lego and hero-factory elements. It does help that the Iron Man head piece is extremely large too, to help with the independent scale of the thing.
The articulated thrusters on the back are a really nice touch too. It looks fun enough that I can totally overlook the fact that nearly every Hulkbuster variation I have seen gives the armor a domed head, similar to Juggernaut helmet. Did a great interpretation of the dome by building up a lot of armor around the official headpiece. Update: Jonsanpedro has now included his inspirational image of a Hulkbuster suit and it does not have a dome head. So what is the 'problem' I have with this project. Will this is not the 'Really Big Iron Man suit' its the Hulkbuster suit.
Its is suppose to be the size of the Hulk. The official Lego Hulk figure is about twice the height of minifig. Maybe I am wrong but it looks to me like this thing would dwarf the Hulk.
I might change my mind if I see them together but picturing it, I can't see them playing off each other very well. Its a pretty minor concern relative to how well done the build is. Support Level: 150 Mecha come in a so many styles and categorizes with recognizable themes. It is rather unusual when you think about it especially for something that is for the most part totally fictional. Reekardoo's design falls into what I consider the Rounded Heavy Power Armor variety: bulky and 'squat' but with plenty of curves. It reminds me a bit of the armor you see in Warhammer 40k but still distinct enough that it is original.
I especially like the hands. They four fingers allow for a lot of realistic looking poses and grips.
The gold chrome is an awesome touch. It reminds me of the Glitter Boy armor form Palladium's Rifts RPG. It really helps sell the concept to Lego fans. Unfortunately that same aspect of the design is why I have a hard time supporting it whole hog. Chrome is really expensive for Lego sets.
A Lego set designer once told me he could budget 20 regular pieces in a set for each chrome piece. The reason for the cost not just the actual act of chroming the elements but also because Lego apparently uses smaller molds for Chrome elements. When you chrome a object, it becomes thicker. So for Lego's exacting standards they need to make thinner elements when they are going to chrome them, thus in many cases new molds. Honorable Mention. Conceptually I love this idea. Has some really great improvements to the Falcon.
I think it would be really interesting if Lego produced expansion sets for their products. Then again, that is what Brickset is for right? That being said, as a Cuusoo project is has a serious uphill battle.
As I pointed out with 's Jubba Palace project, the timing for this kind of project is impracticable. What is the market for Lego in producing an expansion set for a retired product?
There are quite a few of these Star Wars 'giant tree village' projects on Cuusoo. They are Wookie or Ewok but they all basically look the same. I think they make great MOCs when done right but I just don't see them as potential products (at least not as presented in most of Cuusoo. These projects tend to overuse the tree elements, often in a boring manner (in this case four giant shafts) and have limited playability relative to the part count (and subsequent cost).
Deadline Review The next review is June 3rd, 2013.Less than a month away. If League of Legends can get there act together then they could get in by the deadline but they have shown a very unusual quality of immense surges of support followed by long droughts. It is really screwing up my models.
One of the more common 'games' you find on Kickstarter are decks of cards customized to a specific theme or subject. In this example we have. The art on these cards are based on the book of the same name which is the first of the Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss. Personally I can't recommend the series enough. The apparently trilogy is currently incomplete at only two books so far, but I have listened to them both (via Audible) many many times. As to the matter of the deck, to be sure we are not talking about some new card game, but a standard deck of playing cards. These usually work well with the Kickstarter model as they are a very producible product (effectively 53 images give or take), you can choose themes that appeal strongly to a specific, passionate, but limited audience, and the price point is usually very accessible.
With this Kickstarter you can get the deck for $11. Robotech RPG / Tactics.
Palladium games has been producing the Robotech RPG for years and now they are moving into the Tactical market with the assistance of Ninja Division in producing This is a great Kickstarter because it is really hard to judge the marketability of these mature IP's that don't currently penetrate the market. From what I have seen the game does a fair job of capturing the feel of Robotech with equivalent though wildly different forces. The pace of gameplay does seem high and the difficulty to understand low, which is one of the goals of the system. Probably the biggest issue I see for the game is that the entire series is centered on building up the U.N.
Spacey forces as the hero you would want to play. Games without a strong IP influencing them can develop faction that have different levels of attraction to different players.
In Robotech you can either be the Humans protecting the Earth or the Invading Alien Zentradi, and if you play the humans, you get to play with transforming Jets. Who will want to be the Zentradi? As for the details on the Kickstarter, it is going very strong with several days to go.
They have operated it quite cannily by offering a base game package and one with 'all the goodies.' At this point some of the named characters that took to the battlefield on both the U.N. Spacey and Zentradi side have been unlocked: Rick, Roy, Khyron, and Miria. This leaves a glaring exception being Max. This stands out even more given that they have a 'scenario' in which Max is in the title.
My guess is that in the very last days of the campaign, Palladium is going to put Max as an unlockable at a high though achievable goal to generate that final sprint of funding. One final thing about tactical games is that they tend to mesh well with Lego. Support Level: 113 Daft Punk hm.I am only slightly familiar with their music but it does not seem to have anything offensive I can find. But the really cool thing about this is that these guys are celebrities with 'Robot Head.' They look about as accurate as you can get, with no face printing.
On top of that though, these builds are really solid. These do look like some high tech DJ equipment stations. I love the use of the tool as a vinyl disc arm. Not only picked a great subject but also great timing. With a Cuusoo project you want to get something 'timeless' and 'timely' at the same time.
Daft Punk has been around for since 1990 (Goodness that was 23 years ago people!), and they are just about to release a new album which will help in generating initial support levels. Compare this to the that was also published this week. In that proposal the idea is to create a set that integrates sets 9516 and 75005. My best estimates are that even if this project was taking off like gangbusters, it would be no less than a year before it could see production. Right now, one of the two sets is retired and no doubt the other one will be before this could come out.
In my opinion Lego is not going to produce a set that allows you to integrate two retired sets. When submitting projects, it is in your best interest to post something that is either insanely popular and accessible at the moment or has a timeless quality to it will still have people interested in the idea years down the road.
All that being said, I think it will be very difficult for Lego to make Cuusoo projects based on real individual from the modern era. The thing about real people is that they have real lives. Lives can get messy.
Whereas fictional characters are often protected from dramatic changes by the business that own them and their interest to keep their fans happy, real people are entirely unpredictable. There are plenty of cases of celebrities and prominent individuals being awesome role models one year, and disgraced the next. It in not impossible, Lego has made entire sports teams into figures for instance, but there is a clear distinction between the burdens of brand fit for a fictional character and a real person. Honorable Mentions.
